Nathan hopes to avoid reconstructive surgury

The Twins closer Joe Nathan has torn his right ulnar ligament in his elbow. They are hoping to avoid surgury with a routine of rest and rehablilitation. Exactly what this would entail is still unclear. However it seems to me that they are grasping at invisible straws in an effort to salvage what appears to be a lost season.

Lets be realistic, this is not a strain or a pull this is a tear and surgery is the prognosis in almost every similar case. However there has been rare cases where recovery has been made without surgery. To me the most important thing to consider is the timetable at this point, if he is uncertain that it will heal without surgery than he should have the surgery now so that he will be ready to pitch in 2011. If he waits than it may eat into next season. Joe, You are a great pitcher but if there is any doubt about you not needding surgury, have the surgury and come back 100% next year. Otherwise this may drag out into next season.
