Willy Taveras released the day after he was acquired via trade

willy_taveras The Athletics acquired Willy Taveras and Adam Rosales from the Reds for infielder Aaron Miles and a player to be named. The Next day Taveras was DFA’d. Taveras best attribute is his blazing speed. In 2008 Willy stole 68 bags only getting caught seven times. Last season Taveras swiped 25 bases. In the last six years he has stolen a total of 194 bases. Pretty impressive. Unfortunately he doesn’t have much else going for him. He has only eight home runs over those six years and isn’t the best RBI guy either. He isn’t a horrible hitter though and does hold a career .278 average hitting  .320  in 2007. His speed does allow him to cover a lot of ground and he has a .985 career fielding average.

Taveras was a very popular guy in Huston where he spent from 2004-2006 and they have invited him back on a non guaranteed deal  where he could compete for a bench spot. The Athletics still owe $4 million on his current contract but that would be reduced to $400,000 if he signs with another team. Willy is 28 years old and has been up and down with his hitting through his six year career

Personally I think he can do better than a non-guaranteed contract with an invite to spring training where he might get a bench role. Speed like his does not come along every day. I would think he would make a welcome addition to more than a few teams benches.
