Pedro and the Phillies

Pedro Martinez is back in the Majors…well sort of.  He just signed a 1 year 1 million dollar deal with the World Series Champion Phillies.  He was promptly put on the 15 day DL. He will use that time to get ready and make some minor league rehab starts.  The question we have to ask is will he be the Don Zimmer tossing Pedro of old or the one that was on the Mets last year.

Martinez is looking to solidify the Phillies 5 spot in a shaky rotation.  Right now it is a revolving door for the Phillies in the 5th spot.  This is a risky move with out much risk if that makes sense. The best case scenario, Pedro gives you 5 or 6 innings of solid work every 5th day.  Worst case scenario, He is worse then Ricky Vaughn at the beginning of Major League 2.  I think he will give the Phillies 5 or 6 good innings every 5th day.  I believe that he has enough left in the tank to do that for them.  The problem is if he doesn’t do that then did the move prevent Philadelphia from making another move that would have locked down that 5th spot.

All good questions and only time will answer them. I do know this, if Pedro works out the Phillies still need another starter to sure up that awful rotation.
