Yankees to much for helpless Nationals
Even after CC Sabathia gave up the lead via the three run homer you never got the feeling that the Yankees were going to lose this one. CC has gone 7 or more innings in his last 8 starts and tonight was no different.Sabathia went 7.2 innings giving up 3 runs on 6 hits and struck out 2. After which Brian Bruney and Mariano Rivera closed it out. Just like they rehearsed. Robinson Cano had a great night going 4 for 4 with 2 RBI’s. Mark Teixeria also had a big night with the go ahead double that scored Damon all the way from first. The Yankees did not commit an error for only the third time in the last 13 games. The Yankees got some great defense from ARod at third and a snow cone diving catch from Melky Cabrera that deserves to be on tonight’s web gems. The Yankees 5-3 victory over the Nationals marks their tenth straight road loss.
For the Nationals Shairon Martis pitched six effective innings. Giving up one run on four hits. Where the nationals screwed up was giving the game to the bull pen. The worst bull pen in all of baseball by the way. With a record of 5-22 and an ERA over 5 one would think they would just leave their starter out there. What do they really have to lose? With only 16 wins to their credit and being 20 games out of first place the Nationals should definitely be sellers as we approach the trade deadline. Hopefully they can get some pitching in return for Nick Johnson or Adam Dunn.
Derek Jeter came out of the game tonight with a sore Ankle/foot which he thinks he may have done on Sunday when Gary Sheffield broke up a double play. He is listed as Day to Day and is questionable for tomorrows game. But you know Jeter he will probably be in there.
Tomorrow the Yanks and Nats will be at it again as Chien Ming Wang gets the start with a lot on the line. If he doesn’t show well he will probably end up back in the Bull Pen in favor of Phil Hughes who no longer looks overmatched by anyone. He has that look in his eyes that he can get anyone out when previously he looked like a scared puppy with only glimpses of his current swagger.
