The Mets Corner with Tony G

METS%20LOGO

This week is going to be short and sweet. I would like to talk about the phenomenal rivalry that is the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies. It’s alot of fun to watch these two teams battle when they are both at their best. The hate that these two ball clubs have for one another is starting to grow and compare to the epic Yankee and Red Sox rivalry. Both teams are stacked with competitors who would rather win a series against the opposition than see their first seed born.

The down side to a heated rivalry is that it hurts ten times worse when you lose two out of a three game series. What hurts even more than that is the fact that two of the games went into extra innings. It’s not the end of the world for the Mets but it is a shot in the nuts, considering NY had the lead in both games and could do absolutely nothing against the Phillies bullpen. On the other end of it, the Mets bullpen looked a lot like the garbage relief they were use to seeing the past two seasons.

NY needs to not dwell on this series and look ahead to an even tougher series against the Yankees over the weekend. I will tell you one thing; I myself can’t take another loss in a close game. It’s not even half way through the season and I am emotionally drained. Well all I can say to my fellow Metaholics is hang in there; there is plenty of baseball left.

This is Tony G. and thanks for stopping into the Mets Corner for your weekly Metropolitan

Having had shoulder surgery myself I know how long it takes to recover from these things. Better to error on the side of caution.

Burrell, Bartlett set to return to struggling Rays

Burrell, Bartlett set to return to struggling RaysPatBurrell_Rays385x255

This could be huge for the Rays who have been hovering around the .500 mark for a while now. Should provide an offensive boost that they have been looking for. To bad they need pitching too. Boy do they miss Scott Kazmir who is also on the DL.   The Rays arent dead at 6 game out but you have to admit it looks grim.

50 Million for a Strasburg? Stupid!

strasburg This is the thing about sports that I just can’t understand. Why would any team pay any rookie 50 million dollars when he has never thrown a pitch in the Big Leagues ever.  Sure Strasburg pitches 100mph. Sure he has a nasty curve I get it. Bottom line he has never faced major league hitters on a consistent basis.   Neither side has talked dollars but Scott Boras says he plans on asking for a lot more then the previous bench mark which is Mark Prior’s 10.5m. We all see how that turned out for the Cubs.

The problem runs deeper then just Baseball.  Rookies all over are signing outrageous contracts. Matt Ryan last year in the NFL signed a contract that gave him 37.5m guaranteed money. Of course he ended up paying huge dividends but he is the exception to the rule.  Mark Sanchez of the Jets just signed a 5 year 50 million dollar deal.  This kid has never thrown a pass in the NFL.  Owners need to put their foot down. They need to explain to these kids and their agents that they haven’t proved anything nor are they worthy of a Gagillion dollars off the go.  All major league sports need a rookie salary cap. Owners and players unions need to knock these kids down a peg.

The worst part of it is the 30 year old football player. Here is a guy who has been productive for 8 years and can be really productive for the next 6. instead he gets pushed aside and ends up in the UFL or on the Long Island Ducks and some kid who never played a down or thrown one pitch gets his spot. It’s embarrassing.

Don’t look to much into big papi homer.

Ok lets not get all excited folks. David Ortiz hit a fat pitch that was over the heart of the plate and took it over the wall. He is a major league hitter (supposedly) this doesn’t mean he’s all better and the Red Sox should go on like he never slumped. It was a horrible pitch right over the heart of the plate. AJ Burnett knew it and so did  everyone that was watching. Unless you are a Red Sox fan. “Now that  Papi is back we are going to win the world series”. BLAH BLAH BLAH . He is still on a pace to have around 80 hits in 400 AB if the Red Sox don’t bench him.

ortizstruggle

What are they going to do when they start playing interleague ball. I know maybe they should bench Kevin Youkilis so that Ortiz can play first base.

The Yankees and the Red Sox are dead even right now as far as their records go But  their line up just isn’t as impressive without Manny Ramirez and a effective Ortiz in it.

Beyond Beckett their pitching is iffy at best.Tim  Wakefield has never done well against the Yankees and Daisuke Matsuzaka has a record of 1-4 with an ERA over 7. Brad Penny has an ERA over 5 and will probably be traded or released to make room for an aging John  Smoltz when he comes off the DL.  John Lester is 5-5 with an era over 5 as well.

The Yankees starting pitching as a whole is better and they certainly have a better lineup with Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez.

So even though the Red Sox have a 6-0 lead in this season series these two teams will be going at it till the bitter end. Every game counts but don’t think that one good at bat against the Yankees makes David Ortiz back to being a Yankee killer.

As drafted: Nats take Strasburg with No. 1 pick

As drafted: Nats take Strasburg with No. 1 pick

Notebook San Diego State Strasburg BaseballNobody is surprised with this one this kid is in the dictionary under phenom. Steven Strasburg throws a 4 seam fastball at 100 mph a 2 seamer in the low 90’s  and a slider that is better than both of the other two pitches. He was 12-1 at San Diego State with an ERA of 1.32. This kid is going to be a star. Now comes the “but” in this conversation and it goes like this. But its going to be a challenge to sign this kid. The Nationals will have until 8/15/09 to make the deal. The record for a rookie pitcher belongs to Mark Prior who signed for 10.5 million with the Cubs  in 2001. With Scott (money whore) Boras as his agent, rumor has it that he will ask for 50 million.

We all know how insane Boras is. I don’t think there is any way in hell that he will get that, especially from the Washington Nationals. However I would not be surprised if he signs at the deadline for around 15 million.

Could Pettitte win 300 games

Granted this seems unlikely seeing how he has been talking about retiring for a few seasons now lets look at the math before you say I’m crazy.pettitteandclemens

With Andy Pettitte’s win tonight he has 6 so far this season. He has been consistently averaging 15 wins a year for the last 4 seasons .Averaging 33 starts and completing 200 + inning each year. So we can say without reservations that he is a workhorse. Lets assume that he will win 15 games this season. This would leave him with 230 wins at 37 years old.

I know what you are saying. “Mike you are high ,he would need  70 more wins and he is 37 years old.” Now I’m not saying he is going to win 300 games , I’m just saying its not as crazy as it sounds. If he can play 5 more years he will be 42 years old. If he continues to win 15 games a year over those 5 years that would be 75 more wins putting him at 305 wins.

Lets look at what some other pitchers have done after the age of 37

Tom Glavin-54 wins

Randy Johnson – 100 wins

Jamie Moyer- 119 wins

Greg Maddux –66 wins

David Wells – 78 wins

If David wells can win 78 games after the age of 37 their is absolutely no way that a healthy Andy Pettitte couldn’t do it if he wanted to. Will Andy win 300 games? Probably not, could he win 300 games? I think so , but I also think he will retire at the end of this season. But If he doesn’t , well ya never know. Any way you swing it I think he gets a spot in the Hall of Fame what do you think?

Hamilton to undergo surgery, miss 4-6 weeks

Hamilton to undergo surgery, miss 4-6 weeksjosh-hamilton

The Texas Rangers are the beneficiary of living in a weak division. However you still have to win games and winning games is what they do. At 33-24 if the season ended today they would be in the playoffs as winners of their division by 4 games. Sadly at the beginning of the season I picked the A’s to win the west, boy was I wrong. But I did pick Texas to be the AL wild-card over the Boston Red Sox. I think they will win their division but I think the Angels will make it close.

Losing Josh Hamilton is huge. Whether its for 4-6 weeks or 4-6 hours Hamilton is a monster with the bat. Last years silver slugger recipient is off to a slow start with only 6 HR. If he comes back healthy in July look for him to go on a tear.

One thing that nobody called was the resurgence of Andrew Jones.  His .269 average isn’t dominate granted but after hitting .158 last season with the Dodgers its good to see him doing something with the bat again. With Hamilton on the DL he will get more opportunity’s to show us something. Hes a guy I have always routed for. How he went from one of the best to the shell of what he is now is a mystery. ( cough steroids) But hopefully he can make the Braves wish they had never thrown him on the trash heap. Remember the Braves are on our shit list for what they did to Tommy Glavin.

We are off topic a little, sorry, Hamilton’s injury was originally feared to be a hernia but turned out to be an abdominal tear which will certainly shorten his time out of the line-up. Ian Kinsler missed 12 weeks last season with a hernia. Hamilton’s Abdominal tear will only keep him for about 6 weeks. Continue reading ‘Hamilton to undergo surgery, miss 4-6 weeks’

Big Papi says struggles at plate eating him up

Big Papi says struggles at plate eating him up

david_ortizNews Flash: David Ortiz says he will be back. Well what is he supposed to say? ” Yeah, I’m all washed up and the years of taking steroids on the down-low has finally caught up with my 33 (if that’s his real age) year old body.

Show me one case in the history of Baseball that someone has come back from a slump of such an epic proportion and then I might take some validity in what he says.
